Not My Jeans Either

Mom Jeans. Two words that  conjure up images of everything dowdy, un-cool, Midwestern and, well, fat. That’s why I was confused to see ads on buses and billboards across the city for the past few months hawking “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans.” If they are not your daughter’s, then they are yours and you are a mom. That makes these mom jeans. That’s not something to brag about, much less on every cross-town bus and subway platform on one of the most fashion forward cities in the world.

Last night I was scouring the denim selections online , looking for well-fitting, flattering and grown up jeans. I’m over boot-cut, over bell bottoms, over skin-tight, over ultra low rise and certainly very much over butt cleavage. Not that I was ever into butt cleavage, but for the last few years even designers of premium denim could not get themselves enough nouveau plumber crack. I mean if I’m going to spend 3 figures on jeans, they should at least cover the unmentionables, no?

Anyhow, as I was clicking through all the denim styles, time and time again I would end up on Not Your Daughter’s Jeans. WTF? I am young! I’m hip! I’m not even a mommy! Why am I attracted to these mom jeans. Now, I’ve never been a label snob, but I do feel comfortable with a name I trust. Could I really walk around in slacks with ‘Not Your Daughter’s Jeans’ scribbled on the derriere?

This may seem trivial, but I’ve actually been wrestling with this question. From the NYDJ website: “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans® are here to flatten your tummy, lift your butt and allow you to wear one size smaller.” Sounds pretty good right? They are also less than $100.

But still. I just can’t jive with this branding. These jeans are not for me. Maybe one day, but not now. In the meantime I will continue the search for jeans that embody late 20s urban, chic but mature, body conscious but body confidant, fashion forward but practical, premium but affordable, sexy but respectable jeans. Now, I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
