The Math Fashionista

When I was a girl I remember parents getting all riled up about the new talking Barbie doll, who said things like “Math class is tough!” and “Let’s go shopping!” At the time, I didn’t really understand the controversy. So what, school is boring and shopping is fun, no surprise there. But now that I’m older and wiser I can see that these seemingly innocuous comments do make strong impressions on the wee little minds of our youngsters. And maybe if my parents didn’t let me have that idiotic little toy I would be working on an advanced degree in astrophysics instead of sitting here nattering on about clothes and dolls. Eh, maybe not.

Anyway, I was reminded of this little math-hating Barbie doll just now when I spotted this new Fashism user, The Math Fashionista. I then discovered she has a blog dedicated to fashion inspiration for women in technology, science and math. What a cool idea, right? I love the concept, and have been checking out her site, which is full of outfit suggestions and tips that would work for any woman, really. So thanks Math Fashionista, maybe you will inspire Mattel to bring back a Barbie that says “I love shopping! It’s almost as fun as algebra!”
