At Balenciaga, Nicolas Ghesquiere was inspired by the ordinary: biscuits, Formica, plastic, and plywood. Geometric, stiff expertly tailored frocks, boxy jackets and dresses, and uber-high blocked-heel loafers made a serious contribution to a super modern and razor sharp collection.

Dior’s John Galliano revisited his equestrian fascination following his Spring/Summer 2010 Couture show. Flowy chiffon frocks anchored with leather jackets, jodhpurs with plaid wool jackets, and heavy knit sweaters all contributed to this “country chic” show.

At Lanvin, Alber Elbaz gave women what they wanted: utter Parisian sophistication. Lightly structured frocks, boxy silhouettes, an abundance of pleats, metal accents, crystal embroidery, strong shoulders, off the shoulder frocks, and tribal jewelry all helped develop a super chic show.

After gaining a cult-like status among his loyal followers, Haider Ackermann also gave his fans what they wanted: dark, Parisian chic. His jackets were strong and bold; skirts slinky and flowy. The color palette was muted; shades of gray, black and brown all added to the indescribably chic show that truly speaks volumes for Mr. Ackermann.

Jean Paul Gaultier was an eclectic mix of all things Mexican, Moroccan, Indian, Russian, Greek, and Masai. It was a collage of cultures, mixed with classic Gaultier style: trench coats, harem pants, and smoking jackets.

Phoebe Philo’s return to Celine has truly become an absolute sensation. She described the collection as “Strong. Powerful. Reduced.” Boxy jackets, A-line shifts and skirts with interesting cutouts, leather skirts and jackets, funnel-necked coats, and cropped pants all seemed to walk effortlessly down the runway. The use of black, cream, navy, and deep khaki green added subtle interest to the simple but chic collection. This collection is sure to be a hit among Celine’s loyal followers and fashion insiders alike.

If you are one of these thousands of people, you are in for a treat. However, you aren’t in the clear yet. You may have your travel, lodging, and badges taken care of, but that is the easy part. Now you must pack.

As a former Austinite with more than a few years of SXSW under my belt, I have decided to share my wisdom put together a comprehensive guide of what to pack for the SXSW newbie. This is a guide geared towards women, but dudes, listen up. You may benefit from this too.

The essentials:

1. Bathing suit. It may be freezing in New York, but Austin in mid-March can be glorious. There are sure to be more than a few pool parties and many of the downtown hotels have pools. Also, every single person, man or woman should take a trip to Barton Springs while in town. This one is compulsory. I know you will be busy, but if you have to, skip something. A visit to this magical place is what you will remember for years to come, and there will always be another party or panel.
2. Cowboy boots. Trust me here. I know it may seem a ridiculous to go to Texas and sport a pair of boots, but they are the best choice. No one will call you a poser or a city slicker, at least not to your face. First of all, they go with everything. They dress up your jeans and dress down your dresses, leaving you with the perfect combination of edgy, casual and cool. They offer the lift of a high heel, but you can actually walk in them. Also, and most importantly, each time you slip on a pair of cowboys, you slip a little bit into the laid-back Texas mindset. And it feels so good. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a pair. As soon as you get to Austin, head down to Allen’s Boots on South Congress . Afterward, go next door to Gueros Taco bar . Order a Margarita on the rocks and some Mole enchiladas. You can thank me later.
3. Light jacket. Although you will probably see some beautiful warm days, the night air may be a little chilly. Also they have a saying in Texas that “If you don’t like the weather in Texas, wait 5 minutes, it will change,” and while I am convinced that every place says this about their weather, for Texas, it happens to be true. So I recommend a light jacket that can be easily folded up and stuck in a bag. You will be tempted to go to your hotel and change after the day’s events and before going out for the night, but this is not a good idea. You will miss something. I would leave in the morning prepared for all that might come at you. So just stuff the jacket in you bag, even if it is 80 degrees and sunny.
4. That brings me to my next point. Bring an oversize purse/bag to carry around with you. You may be tempted to carry around a backpack, but I wouldn’t. A shoulder bag that’s big enough to fit your laptop and/or cameras would be much more chic. But if you are the type of person who would rather “be comfortable” and “protect your back” than look cool, well, that’s your business I guess.
5. Sunglasses. Bring them with you. It will be a pain to try and buy some once you get there.
6. Sandals. It will probably be warm and you will want to let your poor, winterized feet get some air. Now will be a great time to pay a visit to your shoes from last season and maybe even buy some new spring shoes- since that’s all you can find at the stores anyway. I’d do a pedicure before coming. You will be too busy once you get here. But if you forget, there is always Milk and Honey. It’s close to the convention center, and offers massage, manicure and other spa treatments. It ain’t cheap, but it’s divine.
7. Dresses. Dresses are the easiest thing in my book. Just throw on a dress, sandals and a little eyeliner and you’ll be good to go. If your spring dresses are still in storage, check out Dress Shop on Congress Avenue. They have a great selection of both casual and formal dresses in a range of prices. I would go on Saturday the 13th, because I am hosting an event from 1-4 that will include music, booze, and a photo shoot for Fashism.
8. Finally you will need some jeans, and maybe a few tank tops and sweaters.

What Not To Bring

1. Running Shoes. I’m serious. I know you have great intentions about working out, but in all honesty, you probably won’t and I am providing you will the perfect excuse. Also your hotel doesn’t have a gym! You are on vacation! There is no time! However, I know many of you are insane and probably will wake up early after Tequila and Barbeque fuelled night and go running, of all things. Insanity. And while I do not condone this behavior, if you must exercise, then check out the Town Lake Trail , or ‘the hike and bike trail’ as it’s know to the locals. It’s absolutely beautiful 10-mile trail that travels around downtown, Lady Bird Lake, and the surrounding neighborhoods. It really is a gem.
2. High heels. I just don’t think you will wear them. Austin is a casual place. Don’t get me wrong, people here have mad style, but they don’t usually totter around in stilettos. Plus, you will be doing a lot of walking and they will just be annoying.
3. T-shirts. You will acquire your weight in free t-shirt swag. Don’t bother bringing your own. You will need the suitcase room.

What to Leave Room For

There is some great shopping to be done in Austin, so don’t forget to leave some room in your suitcase. I mentioned a few, but here are some more places you should check out.

1. Feathers. Beautifully curated vintage clothes, located on South Congress, probably the best shopping street in Austin.
2. Buy Definition. It’s a great place to buy inspired clothes on the web, so why not check out their one and only brick-and-mortar store located deep in the heart of Texas!
3. Thrift Town. You will need a car for this one. But there are some real finds to be had at this thrift store. And it’s cheap. I’m talking single-digits cheap.
4. Also, if you are really into fashion and shopping, you may want to check out the New Media Boutique Crawl on Friday the 12th. a slew of bloggers and other fashion types from Austin and beyond (including yours truly) will be popping in all the fantastic Austin boutiques. Follow @newmediafashion to keep track of the gang.

Ok, I hope this guide has been helpful. And enjoy your trip to Austin!

Bellaga, a new marketplace for indie fashion, launched this week...

Bellaga, a new marketplace for indie fashion, launched this week at the New York Tech Meetup.

The design is clean, the photography edgy and the clothes are cool. Most of the price points seem a little rich for my blood, but I shop at Payless, so whatevs. I’m all for more ways to see collections from up and coming designers, so bring it on guys.

Also, looks like they are having a launch party tonight in NYC. You can RSVP here.

From Marc Jacobs to Balmain, military-inspired clothing is all...

From Marc Jacobs to Balmain, military-inspired clothing is all the rage for spring.

Miuccia Prada revisited her classic 90’s style, reinventing things she did in the past with a new twist; bust emphasis, 50’s and 60’s styling, “quiet sexy” curvature, and “librarian chic.” Flared skirts, dance dresses, and chunky sweaters and coats with double layered collars of cable knit and fur all added to the show.

Donatella Versace played with strong, sexy silhouettes in geometric and asymmetrical cuts. We also saw sharp jackets, metallics, and red carpet worthy evening wear.

Gianfranco Ferre simplified and stream lined for Fall 2010, instead focusing on subtle details and “decorated minimalism.” Black leather, nude jersey, and an abundance of fur helped add to the “lighter touch.”

Emilio Pucci showed a strong collection that hit every fashion high note. Peter Dundas stuck to the edgy rock’n’roll vibe that appeals to his young, devoted followers, but added some serious glamour. This glamour might just appeal to an older crowd. Amidst the tight, sexy dresses with swinging fringe we saw great trousers and beautiful jackets in different skins and the occasional blouse. Perfection.

Moschino was fun and chic; lot’s of ruffles, pops of color, and great jackets.

Fendi showed a soft, subdued collection full of fur, swing coats, soft blouses, flared skirts, and all out soft elegance. Black, mustard, off white, navy, brown, and gray all played an important role in keeping the collection light, regardless of how much fur there was!

According to the heavy hitters of fashion week, the old west is on the horizon.

Derek Lam conjured a mid-west feeling, showing fringed belts, blanket embroideries and cowboy hats.

A’Detacher was described as “Lady Redneck” by designer Mona Kowalska; with a collection featuring hip, boxy frocks done in corduroy and heavy wool.

Chris Benz had cool girl frocks mixed with a wilderness camp look including heavy furs, boxy jackets and bright colors.

Donna Karan showed an almost an entirely black collection including boxy jackets, draped frocks and constructed jackets.

Marc Jacobs toyed with archival pieces by changing elements from his repertoire to create a dreamy, chic, and wearable collection. Long skirts, boxy jackets, and muted colors contributed to the meaningful collection.

Monique Lhullier showed ubber femme short, sexy, and tight dresses with not a single pair of pants in sight.

Isaac Mizrahi showed everything a Mizrahi collection is known to contain: plaid, quilted, anoraks, and parkas.

Tommy Hilfiger closed NYFW with a New England chic collection, OTK duck boots, pea coats, and preppy cool frocks that all added to the last great NYFW show ever at Bryant Park.

On Friday, February 26, The Limited will team up with...

On Friday, February 26, The Limited will team up with Fashism.com to offer free, personalized, professional styling advice to all!

From 3-6 pm Elliot Staples, VP of Design for The Limited will be a guest commenter on Fashism. Lamija Suljevic’s work...

Designer Profile: Lamija Suljevic

Lamija Suljevic’s work is full of life and utter beauty. She began her training at age 11 when her mother taught her to knit, sparking an interest in crochet that has come to be a hallmark of her designs. Suljevic cultivated this interest and became a fashion design student focusing on pattern making and tailoring.

Fabric also plays a critical role in her designs; if the appropriate fabric can’t be found, the dress is altered or removed from the collection. For Fall 2010, Suljevic experimented with tiny waists, high bust lines, and extreme shapes which dramatically redefine the wearer’s body.

Born in Bosnia but raised in Sweden, Suljevic used fashion as a way to express her childhood of fleeing a war torn Bosnia. Her work is the story of everything she lost as a child, whether it be the genetic makeup of her clothing or a tiny detail like a label. As she begins to tell her story through her work, we will eagerly wait for the next chapter.

G.Fracasse

Lamija Suljevic will present an installation during the SCOPE Art Show on March 3-7 2010. Information is available at scope-art.com
Lincoln Center Damrosch Park
62nd Street and Amsterdam (10th Avenue)
New York, NY 10023

New York Fashion Week Update

by George Fracasse

With the death of Alexander McQueen, the down economy, and a blizzard that almost cancelled fashion week, it’s fair to say things have gotten off on a rough start. And the runway appears to be echoing this tone. From BCBG Maz Azria to Richard Chai Love, the collections have had a somber, relaxed mood.

Cushnie et Ochs showed modern, anti-sexy clothing done in shades of black, brown, and ivory focusing more on design and cut. Michael Angel and L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani both showed strappy belts draped and knotted over jackets and slouchy t-shirt’s, as did numerous other designers.

Jen Kao experimented with sexy knit dresses via her “cool-girl” look. Shipley and Halmos aimed to reassess what a woman wants in her closet and chose to design for her. Prints were seen everywhere from Jason Wu to Ports 1961. Mr. Wu toyed with plaid wools, floral prints, and playful dotted chiffon’s.

Foursquare + Marc Jacobs = Total Awesomeness
